Tumours

Tumours are of little importance with the children living in the D.I. Jogjakarta. During the period July 1, 1954 till July 1, 1958 35 children suffering from a tumour were admitted to the two children’s wards in Jogjakarta, mentioned above. Out of these groups of patients 13 children died. The 2 infants who died of a tumour were classed in the section: “All other causes of death” (see table VII-7), while the toddlers and schoolchildren who died by tumours were classed in a separate section, In nine cases it is possible that the tumour concerned was examined by the pathologist Prof. B.Soetarso because operation, diagnostic partial excision of the tumour, or puncture post mortem happened. The next table gives a summary of the 13 patients, aged under ten, who died of tumours.
The other 22 patients who were admitted because of a tumour concerned patients suffering from hemangiomas (6 patients); papilloma of the rectum (3 patients); lymphangioma colli or cystic hygroma (2 patients); and one patient suffering respectively from papilloma of the vocal chord (aged 4); rest of primitive kidney in scrotum (aged 4); teratoma ovarii (aged 5); fibroma in mesentery (aged 5); fibrosarcoma of right cheek (aged 8); fibrosarcoma of right os mixillare (aged 9); teratoma in sacral region (aged 2 months ); lipoma (aged 8 months); while 2 patients were admitted whose parents refused operation, so that the nature of the tumour remained unknown.
All the tumours were examined by the pathologist except for the hemangiomas and the papilloma of the rectum.
