In this and the next chapter the clinical and epidemiological aspects will be described of a number of diseases which appeared to be important causes of death in infancy and childhood of the inhabitants of the D.I. Jogjakarta. The data were obtained in the children’s ward of Bethesda-hospital and from the Gadjah Mada University at Jogjakarta during the period July 1, 1954 – July 1, 1958.
Protein-calorie-malnutrition is left out of consideration, because this disease is described in a separate chapter. In this chapter the diseases causing high infant-mortality are discussed, while in the next chapter the diseases which chiefly cause mortality among toddlers and schoolchildren will be taken into consideration.
As far as local circumstances allowed we investigated:
The frequency of the different diseases among the admitted patients.
The age-group with the greatest number of patients suffering from these
special diseases.
Mortality among the patients suffering from these diseases.
The spread of these diseases over the region of the D.I. Jogjakarta.
A survey of the diseases, which are of importance in infant- and child-mortality is given in table VII-7 and table VIII-1.
In this chapter, which will contain seven separate sections, will be discussed:
1. Prematurity,
2. Congenital malformations,
3. Tetanus of the newborn,
4. Septicemia in the newborn,
5. congenital syphilis,
