Professor Maarten Timmer studied medicine at the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands.
He received a training in tropical pediatrics by Professor E. Perabo at Yogjakarta Indonesia and started at the same time a research project about child mortality an population pressure in that area.
The results were published and accepted by the Indonesian government as political relevant data.
After a short period of general medical practice he continued as a medical research worker successively at the Free University Amsterdam, the Royal Tropical Institute of the Netherlands and at research department of social welfare.
He became professor at the University of Amsterdam.
